The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is responsible for clinical and administrative support for patient care in an ambulatory clinic environment. The CMA is responsible for maintaining an inventory of examination room supplies, assists in the efficient organization of patient flow, and organization of the clinical area to ensure patient safety. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, and administering vaccinations and other medications as directed by a physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Escorts patients to the exam room and collects patient information and assessment data.
  • Obtains and records patient’s vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, weight, height, and SAO2.
  • Reports assessment findings to practitioners, and records appropriate documentation in a timely manner in the patient's chart.
  • Performs chart review prior to clinic visit to obtain historical and medication data.
  • Monitors patient status, recognizing and reporting abnormal findings or changes in condition to practitioner.
  • Organizes patient care activities based on assessment findings.
  • Maintains and uses principles of aseptic techniques and infection control when performing clinical duties and tasks.
  • Under clinical supervision, it performs delegated procedures common to the practice in a safe, effective, and efficient manner according to Clinical Practice Policy and Procedures.
  • These procedures would include IM and SubQ injection, EKG, phlebotomy, PFT, ear irrigation, etc.
  • Appropriately obtains patient samples (urine, sputum, etc) and manages specimens, including: labeling, order maintenance, notification to billing, etc.
  • Identifies patient’s need for additional information, and refers to appropriate health care resources.
  • Assists patients in wheelchairs with transfers to and from exam tables, procedure tables, and scales utilizing proper body mechanics and safety measures.
  • Orders, stocks, and maintains exam rooms and clinic areas with standard levels of supplies, medications, linens, forms, and equipment.
  • Recognizes patient care trends affecting unit supplies and notifies supervisors.
  • Ensures that soiled linen, needle containers and potentially infectious waste are appropriately disposed of and removed from the clinic and exam area according to the infection control guidelines.
  • Ensures that clinical rooms are sanitized between patient visits for appropriate infection control.
  • Performs delegated tasks, which includes requests for prescription refills, taking and relaying messages, and directing patient flow.
  • Works with the healthcare team to assure smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operation.
  • Problem solves obstacles to throughput process and notifies provider and patients of wait time.
  • Helps out in all areas of the clinic based on clinic need.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Willingness and ability to contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) 
  • Excellent interpersonal and patient care orientation.
  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills, is able to be diplomatic and positive in communications.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Experience with maintaining patient data in an electronic medical record system is preferred.
  • Experience taking vital signs is preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED and one year of experience as a CMA
  • Must have current certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant by the American Association of Medical Assistants or NCCT .

  • This is an in-person job
  • Day shift, Monday through Friday, 40 hours

  • This position will provide coverage at all three Valley Clinics locations as needed. 
Pay Scale: $22.00 - $26.00 an hour
